Senior Goalies Enjoy Solid Performances in 1-1 Tie

Box Score

Perhaps it was fitting that neither UW-Stevens Points Amy Statz nor Lake Forests Sally Bevis came away with a loss in Fridays Northern Collegiate Hockey Association womens contest on Friday in Stevens Point.

Both senior goaltenders turned in outstanding performances in helping their teams to a 1-1 tie at Ice Hawks Arena. The tie clinched a postseason playoff berth for the Pointers, but dealt a serious blow to their two-year run as league champions as they fell to 14-5-2 overall and 6-4-2 in the NCHA. Lake Forest went to overtime for the eighth time this season and is now 9-5-6 overall and 4-3-5 in the league.

Bevis made 42 saves, but was at her best in overtime where UW-Stevens Point had a two-minute power play and outshot the Foresters 9-0. Bevis stopped all nine chances, including several at the doorstep of the net. The Pointers even pulled the goalie for the final 12 seconds, but Lake Forest won the faceoff and held the puck in the corner.

Statz, meanwhile, had 19 saves and made her mark late in the third period. Lake Forest had a power play in the final five minutes and had numerous opportunities with open shots from the point, but Statz made most of her 11 third period saves down the stretch.

The only blemish against Statzs night came on a defensive turnover as Lake Forests Courtney DeHoey converted a shorthanded goal at the 6:05 mark of the second period. The Pointers turned the puck over deep in their own zone, passing it directly to DeHoey, who converted a shot directly in front of the net.

Bevis frustrated the Pointers most of the night, turning away numerous quality chances, but UW-Stevens Point finally broke through on their sixth power play chance of the night at the 10:14 mark of the third period. Senior Chris Hanson, who has scored several big goals during her four seasons, added another when she lofted a long shot that curled inside the post. The goal was set up off a hard pass from Sarah Phillips that didnt give the Foresters defense time to set for Hansons shot.

The Pointers outshot Lake Forest 43-20 and dominated the first period with a 17-3 advantage in the first 20 minutes.

The teams meet again on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Ice Hawks Arena.
