Statz Sets Wins Record Behind Third Period Rally

Box Score

UW-Stevens Point used a dominating third period to break free from UW-Eau Claire for a 5-2 road victory on Friday and make senior Amy Statz the all-time winningest goalie in NCAA Division III womens hockey history.

After UW-Eau Claire tied the game at 2-2 early in the third period, the Pointers scored three straight goals and outshot the Blugolds 14-2 in the final stanza. UW-Stevens Point had five different players score goals and improved to 13-5-1 overall and 5-4-1 in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association. The Blugolds are 10-9-2 overall and 4-6-2 in the NCHA.

Statz made 13 saves with 10 coming in the second period to improve to 63-17-10 for her four-year career. She passed Carolyne Roy, who played at Plattsburgh State from 2002-05 and Katie Kogut, who played at Middlebury from 2003-06. Statz has all but 12 of the Pointers victories over the past four seasons and now has 12 wins this season.

The Pointers built a two-goal lead as Madison Darud scored off a pass from Trish Piskula late in the first period and Jenna Daggit scored an unassisted goal in the second period.

The Blugolds answered with a power play goal from Lauren Havard with 1:43 left in the second period and an even-strength goal by Laura Suppes 18 seconds into the third period to tie the game.

However, UW-Stevens Point rallied less than two minutes later as Nicole Grossmann scored unassisted and then Piskula scored off a pass from Sarah Phillips at the 7:05 mark. Kellye Nelson finished the three-goal spurt at the 12:46 mark off an assist from Jamie Lewandowski.

The Pointers outshot the Blugolds 28-15 and avenged a loss from earlier this season in a game which they also led after two periods and surrendered a UW-Eau Claire comeback. The teams play for the third time on Saturday in Stevens Point at 7:30 p.m. at Ice Hawks Arena.
