Clear First Hurdle at NCHA Playoffs

One hurdle is out of the way and another one lies
ahead for the UW-Superior women�s hockey team.
The Yellowjackets avenged semifinal losses to
UW-River Falls three of the past four years and now have a chance to make up
for its only two regular season defeats when they meet UW-Stevens Point for
the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association playoff championship in Stevens
Point.
UW-Superior won Friday�s semifinal 4-1 and
improved to 22-2-2 for the season. The Yellowjackets suffered both losses
and a tie to the host Pointers in three regular season meetings. The teams
will meet again at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday as UW-Superior will play in the
title game for the third time and face a rematch of the 2004 title game that
UW-Stevens Point won 2-1 in double overtime. UW-River Falls will play in the
consolation game against Lake Forest at 4 p.m.
The Yellowjackets scored the game�s first goal on
a power play at the 14:54 mark of the first period when Susie Crabb blasted
a long shot from the blue line high into the net.
UW-Superior went ahead 2-0 early in the second
period on a goal from Lindsay Bennett and then Jamie McClintock scored a
breakaway goal seconds after a Yellowjackets� penalty expired for a
three-goal advantage with 2:44 left in the period.
UW-River Falls notched its goal just over a minute
later when Lou Paulson knocked in a rebound. The Falcons finished with a
31-30 advantage in shots, though the Yellowjackets controlled the action for
most of the game.
UW-Superior finished the scoring at the 1:48 mark
of the third period when Vi Theofylatos fed a perfect pass to Bennett from
behind the net.
Kristy Faechner made 30 saves for UW-Superior,
while Mandi Mohwinkel stopped 26 shots for UW-River Falls. |
