Yellowjackets Clear First Hurdle at NCHA Playoffs

Box Score

One hurdle is out of the way and another one lies ahead for the UW-Superior womens hockey team.

The Yellowjackets avenged semifinal losses to UW-River Falls three of the past four years and now have a chance to make up for its only two regular season defeats when they meet UW-Stevens Point for the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association playoff championship in Stevens Point.

UW-Superior won Fridays semifinal 4-1 and improved to 22-2-2 for the season. The Yellowjackets suffered both losses and a tie to the host Pointers in three regular season meetings. The teams will meet again at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday as UW-Superior will play in the title game for the third time and face a rematch of the 2004 title game that UW-Stevens Point won 2-1 in double overtime. UW-River Falls will play in the consolation game against Lake Forest at 4 p.m.

The Yellowjackets scored the games first goal on a power play at the 14:54 mark of the first period when Susie Crabb blasted a long shot from the blue line high into the net.

UW-Superior went ahead 2-0 early in the second period on a goal from Lindsay Bennett and then Jamie McClintock scored a breakaway goal seconds after a Yellowjackets penalty expired for a three-goal advantage with 2:44 left in the period.

UW-River Falls notched its goal just over a minute later when Lou Paulson knocked in a rebound. The Falcons finished with a 31-30 advantage in shots, though the Yellowjackets controlled the action for most of the game.

UW-Superior finished the scoring at the 1:48 mark of the third period when Vi Theofylatos fed a perfect pass to Bennett from behind the net.

Kristy Faechner made 30 saves for UW-Superior, while Mandi Mohwinkel stopped 26 shots for UW-River Falls.
