Score
The most successful season in UW-Eau Claire women's
hockey history took another big stride on Sunday as the Blugolds closed out the
year with their first-ever postseason victory in a 5-1 win over UW-Superior in
the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association third place game.
The Blugolds wrapped up the season
at 15-9-1, posting five more wins than any previous season in their five-year
history. The win was their first in six all-time NCHA tournament games.
UW-Eau Claire took advantage of
all its scoring opportunities and got solid goaltending from Jill Arendt to
score the game's first five goals and cruise to the victory over the
Yellowjackets, who were still reeling from a heartbreaking overtime loss to
UW-River Falls in Saturday's semifinals and fell to 15-8-2.
Allie Campbell scored a power play
goal in the first period to stake UW-Eau Claire to an early lead, which stood
for most of the second period. A pair of Blugolds' strikes late in the period
coming 50 seconds apart put them in position for the victory as Christa Hubert
and Tara Hayner both scored for a 3-0 lead.
UW-Eau Claire got a power play
chance early in the third period and cashed in with another goal from Hayner for
a 4-0 advantage. Theresa Guindon added a score with 9:08 left in the game. Karen
Hebert and Laura Brackey each had two assists for the victors.
UW-Superior gained some life with
5:30 left in the game on a goal by Kyla Thibideau, but it was too late for the
Yellowjackets, who held a 22-21 advantage in shots. Arendt made 21 saves for the
Blugolds and Kristy Faechner stopped 16 shots for UW-Superior.
The Blugolds snapped an eight-game
losing streak to the Yellowjackets and had their second win over UW-Superior in
22 all-time meetings. |
