Houghton's Fast Start Helps Egner Claim 300th

Box Score

Haley Houghton got the UW-Stevens Point womens basketball team off to a fast start by scoring the games first eight points and the Pointers never looked back in an 84-48 win over UW-Superior on Wednesday at Berg Gym.

The victory marked the 300th career win for Pointers coach Shirley Egner, who is now 300-154 in her 18th season. Egner is the second coach in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference history to reach the mark and will face the other on Saturday when the Pointers visit UW-Stout and coach Mark Thomas.

Houghton opened the game with a three-pointer and then made a fastbreak layup before adding another three-pointer for the early cushion. UW-Superiors Katie Moench hit three three-pointers in the first seven minutes as the Yellowjackets trimmed the lead to 14-12. UW-Stevens Point led 22-18 with eight minutes left in the half and went on an 11-2 run that was capped by another Houghton three-pointer for a 33-20 advantage. The junior guard finished with 15 of her 17 points in the first half.

The Pointers led 43-25 at halftime and opened the second half with a 17-5 run that was finished by Houghtons only basket of the half for a 58-30 lead with 13:46 remaining.

UW-Stevens Point had no player play for more than 20 minutes in the contest and had 52 of its 84 points scored by reserves with 14 different players scoring points. Ashley Windt contributed a career-high 15 points off the bench and was four-for-five from three-point range.

UW-Stevens Point also held a 43-22 rebounding advantage and had 19 offensive rebounds. The Pointers were 10-for-20 from three-point range, marking their most in a game since making 10 against UW-Superior on Feb. 22, 2003.

The Pointers, who are ranked 24th in the NCAA Division III, are now 10-2 overall and 3-2 in the WIAC. UW-Superior had a three-game winning streak snapped and fell to 5-6 overall and 0-5 in the league.
