Pointers Repeat 10-Point
Victory Over Lawrence
Box Score
UW-Stevens Point delivered its second 10-point
win over Lawrence in less than a month as the Pointers posted a 65-55
womens basketball victory over the Vikings on Tuesday in Appleton.
The Pointers, who beat the Vikings 75-65 on Nov.
17, had an incredibly balanced attack with seven players scoring between
seven and nine points. In fact, neither team had a player score double
figures and five Pointers players grabbed at least four rebounds.
It marked the first time since 1985-86 that the
Pointers have scheduled a non-conference foe twice in the same season as
UW-Stevens Point improved to 8-2 overall. Lawrence fell to 4-3 for the
season and had a four-game winning streak snapped after opening the year
with two losses in the Pointers tournament.
The teams opened the game red-hot from the
floor, each scoring 21 points in the first nine and a half minutes of the
game. Things cooled considerably from that point, especially on Lawrences
side where the Vikings scored six points the rest of the half and trailed
33-27 at halftime. In fact, neither team made a field goal in the final
4:34 of the period with UW-Stevens Point scoring the only three points
during the span from the free throw line.
After missing their last six field goal attempts
of the first half, the Vikings cold spell continued into the start of the
second half as they missed six more shots before Erin Henzis basket
finally snapped an 8-1 Pointers run and trimmed the lead to 41-30 with
15:35 left. UW-Stevens Point kept the Vikings without another point and
opened up its biggest lead of the game at 14 points until Jen Gabriele hit
a three-pointer to cut the lead to 44-33 with 11:28 remaining.
Gabrieles shot started a 9-0 run as the Vikings
cut the lead to five points, however, Laura Neuenfeldt hit a short jumper
to end the spurt and Nathalie Lechault followed with an inside basket to
push the Pointers lead back to 48-39 with 7:40 left. Lawrence twice cut
the lead to six points, but Janell Van Gomple and Katie Webber hit
three-pointers on each of the Pointers ensuing possessions to smother any
potential rally.
Webber, Haley Houghton and Chelsea Kranz each had
nine points for UW-Stevens Point. Lechault had eight points and five
rebounds in just 13 minutes while battling foul trouble. Gabriele hit
three three-pointers in nine minutes down the stretch to lead Lawrence
with nine points. |
