Pointers Shake Off Cold Night
to Beat Finlandia

UW-Stevens Point overcame a cold shooting
night to pull away from Finlandia for a 60-48 women�s basketball victory
on Thursday at Berg Gym.
The Pointers, who entered the game as one of
the nation�s most prolific shooting teams at 49.0 percent for the
season, shot just 25.7 percent in the first half and 30.4 percent in the
second half, but it was enough to come away with the victory. Finlandia
was nearly as cold from the field at 34.5 percent and had 19 turnovers.
Neither team held bigger than a six-point
advantage in the first 32 minutes of the game and the Pointers led 27-25
at halftime on a three-pointer by Haley Houghton with 42 seconds left in
the half.
Finlandia took a brief 29-28 lead that lasted
for 20 seconds for its only second half lead. The Pointers maintained
their small cushion and led 38-37 with 11:26 when the Lions missed their
next five shots and a pair of free throws. UW-Stevens Point got a pair
of inside baskets from Ashley Baker during a 7-0 run over the next 5:16
and led 47-39 with 6:10 to play.
Katie Webber later knocked down a
three-pointer to give the Pointers a 53-43 lead with 3:37 left that put
UW-Stevens Point in full control.
Chelsea Kranz led another balanced scoring
performance for UW-Stevens Point with 11 points. Houghton had eight
points and nine rebounds as the Pointers outrebounded the Lions 51-35,
including 25 offensive rebounds.
Brigitte LaPointe had 14 points and eight
rebounds to lead Finlandia, scoring 12 of her points in the second half.
UW-Stevens Point is now 9-2 overall heading
into a 19-day layoff, while the Lions are 1-8 overall. |
