Box Score

A back-and-forth battle went UW-Whitewaters way in the closing minutes as the Warhawks pulled away for a 65-61 womens basketball victory over UW-Stevens Point on Wednesday in Whitewater.

The game featured 16 lead changes and was tied 14 times, including a 54-54 deadlock before Jessica Wendt put the Warhawks ahead with a layup with 3:44 left. UW-Stevens Point cut the lead to 60-59 and had two possessions down by one in the final two minutes, but failed to score on either as UW-Whitewater hung on for the win.

The victory snapped UW-Stevens Points five-game winning streak and an 11-game win streak over UW-Whitewater. The Pointers won the first meeting this year 86-57 on Dec. 7.

The Pointers also dropped back into a tie for first place in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with a 16-6 overall record and 9-4 conference mark. The Warhawks are 12-10 overall and 6-7 in the league.

UW-Whitewater led 31-28 at halftime, but neither team had larger than a three-point lead until the Warhawks went ahead 48-44 with 11:29 left. UW-Stevens Point scored the next five points to take a 49-48 lead with 7:54 left on a basket by Becky Pepper, but it would be the Pointers final lead of the game.

The Warhawks had a six-point run to go ahead 54-49 for their largest lead of the second half before another five-point spurt by the Pointers capped by a Nathalie Lechault inside basket tied the game at 54-54, setting up Wendts go-ahead basket.

UW-Stevens Point was hampered by 31 turnovers, including another with 1:05 left in the game while facing a one-point deficit. Lindsay Buechner hit a shot to put UW-Whitewater up 62-59 with 53 seconds left and Laura Neuenfeldt missed a three-pointer for the Pointers with 40 seconds left.

Buechner hit one free throw with 21 seconds left to put the Warhawks up by four points, but Chelsea Kranz cut the lead to 63-61 with two free throws with 14 seconds left for the Pointers.

Amy Morris, the top free throw shooter in the WIAC, then hit a pair with 12 seconds left to seal the victory for the Warhawks. Morris had 16 of her game-high 24 points in the second half.

Cassandra Schultz had 17 points and Kranz added 11 to lead the Pointers in scoring.
