Short at Whitewater

A back-and-forth battle
went UW-Whitewater�s way in the closing minutes as the Warhawks pulled
away for a 65-61 women�s basketball victory over UW-Stevens Point on
Wednesday in Whitewater.
The game featured 16 lead
changes and was tied 14 times, including a 54-54 deadlock before Jessica
Wendt put the Warhawks ahead with a layup with 3:44 left. UW-Stevens Point
cut the lead to 60-59 and had two possessions down by one in the final two
minutes, but failed to score on either as UW-Whitewater hung on for the
win.
The victory snapped
UW-Stevens Point�s five-game winning streak and an 11-game win streak over
UW-Whitewater. The Pointers won the first meeting this year 86-57 on Dec.
7.
The Pointers also dropped
back into a tie for first place in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference with a 16-6 overall record and 9-4 conference mark. The
Warhawks are 12-10 overall and 6-7 in the league.
UW-Whitewater led 31-28 at
halftime, but neither team had larger than a three-point lead until the
Warhawks went ahead 48-44 with 11:29 left. UW-Stevens Point scored the
next five points to take a 49-48 lead with 7:54 left on a basket by Becky
Pepper, but it would be the Pointers� final lead of the game.
The Warhawks had a
six-point run to go ahead 54-49 for their largest lead of the second half
before another five-point spurt by the Pointers capped by a Nathalie
Lechault inside basket tied the game at 54-54, setting up Wendt�s go-ahead
basket.
UW-Stevens Point was
hampered by 31 turnovers, including another with 1:05 left in the game
while facing a one-point deficit. Lindsay Buechner hit a shot to put
UW-Whitewater up 62-59 with 53 seconds left and Laura Neuenfeldt missed a
three-pointer for the Pointers with 40 seconds left.
Buechner hit one free
throw with 21 seconds left to put the Warhawks up by four points, but
Chelsea Kranz cut the lead to 63-61 with two free throws with 14 seconds
left for the Pointers.
Amy Morris, the top free
throw shooter in the WIAC, then hit a pair with 12 seconds left to seal
the victory for the Warhawks. Morris had 16 of her game-high 24 points in
the second half.
Cassandra Schultz had 17
points and Kranz added 11 to lead the Pointers in scoring. |
