Basketball Team Announces Recruiting Class
The UW-Stevens Point women�s basketball team has
announced five recruits for the 2005-06 season.
Ashley Baker of Pittsville, Sara
Nelson of Mondovi, Jessi Sporle of Mineral Point, Janell Van
Gomple of DeForest, and Ashley Windt of Hurley have all
informed coach Shirley Egner of their intentions to attend the school and
play basketball for the Pointers next fall.
UW-Stevens Point is coming off its second
straight Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference regular season
championship after posting a 21-6 overall record. The Pointers have
advanced to the NCAA Division III final four two of the past four years.
Baker, a 5-11 forward, was a unanimous
first-team All-Marawood South Conference selection the past two years. She
averaged 14 points per game and 4.9 rebounds per game in conference play
during her senior season and helped the Panthers to the state tournament
as a junior.
Nelson, a 6-1 forward, played last season
at Division II Coker College (S.C.) where she averaged 5.9 points per game
and 2.8 rebounds per game. In high school, Nelson was a first-team
All-Dunn-St. Croix Conference selection as a junior and a second-team
All-Conference selection as a senior. She averaged 10.1 points per game
and 7.3 rebounds per game during her senior season.
Sporle, a 6-0 forward, was named
honorable mention all-state after averaging 15 points per game, 6.1
rebounds per game and 3.7 assists per game as a senior. Sporle was also a
first-team All-Southwest Wisconsin Athletic League (Small) selection the
past two years.
Van Gomple, a 5-9 guard/forward, was
named fourth-team all-state after averaging 15 points per game, 8.3
rebounds per game and three steals per game as a senior. The Madison area
Player of the Year by the Capital Times, Van Gomple was also a
first-team All-Badger North Conference selection the past two years and
she was named to the All-State Tournament Team after leading DeForest to
the state semifinals last year.
Windt, a 5-9 guard, was a first-team
All-Indianhead Conference selection the past three years and was a starter
all four years. She averaged 16.9 points per game and 4.9 rebounds per
game while shooting 90 percent from the free throw line. Windt led Hurley
to a conference championship as a sophomore and to an 18-4 record last
season. |
