Nechuta Named
First-Team Kodak All-American
For just the second time in school history,
UW-Stevens Point landed a first-team Kodak womens basketball All-American
as Amanda Nechuta earned the honor as selected by the Womens Basketball
Coaches Association.
Nechuta, a Mosinee native, was one of only two
juniors on the 10-member squad. She joins Sonja Sorensen as the only
Pointers ever to earn the award. Sorensen was a two-time selection in 1987
and 1988.
In addition, Nechuta was
named a First Team All-American by Women's D-III News. She was also named to the D3hoops.com
All-America second team after earning fourth team honors last season. She
was the only non-senior on the first or second team. Kari Groshek is the
Pointers only D3hoops.com first-team All-American, earning the award in
2002.
Nechuta helped the Pointers to their first
Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title since 1987 and second
NCAA Division III final four appearance in three years as UW-Stevens Point
finished 28-5 overall.
The 5-10 forward set a single-season school
record with 617 points this season, easily surpassing the previous record
of 499 shared by Sorensen and Groshek. Nechutas 18.7 points per game led
the conference for the second straight year as she earned WIAC Player of
the Year honors.
Nechuta also ranked third in the league with
2.67 steals per contest, fourth with a 53.1 field goal percentage and
sixth with 7.3 rebounds per game. Her 1,348 career points ranks fourth on
the schools all-time list.
In addition to the All-American honor, Nechuta
was named to the D3hoops.com All-Central Region squad for the second
straight year. |
