Pointers Extend Streak in Claiming Viterbo Title

     UW-Stevens Point posted sweeps in all four matches and extended its winning streak to nine straight by capturing the Viterbo volleyball Invitational on Saturday in La Crosse.

     It marks the Pointers' longest winning streak since the 1986 season. UW-Stevens Point finished 6-0 for the week with the four weekend victories.

     The Pointers served 26 aces in an opening match win over Finlandia by scores of 30-14, 30-19, 30-21. Pam Nora had eight aces and Lori Marten added six aces and 13 digs. Shelly Maus totaled eight kills despite playing just one game.

     UW-Stevens Point also rolled over Cardinal Stritch 30-20, 30-24, 30-27 in its second match on Saturday. Maus had 14 kills and Marten collected 23 digs in the win. Beth Richter had nine kills and 11 digs, while Callie Kunde had 25 assists.

     On Friday, the Pointers defeated St. Catherine 30-22, 30-20, 30-22 as Maus had 11 kills and five blocks. Richter contributed eight kills and Marten amassed 23 digs. Jill Wittmann had 18 assists.

     Kunde had her sixth triple-double of the season in Friday's opening win, a 30-27, 30-20, 30-13 triumph over William Penn. Kunde had 10 kills, 11 digs and 16 assists. Maus totaled nine kills and nine blocks and Marten had 11 digs.

     Maus and Wittmann were each named to the all-tournament team as the Pointers improved to 18-6 heading into a showdown Wednesday at defending national champion UW-Whitewater.
