Defensive Efforts Spark Pointers Past St. Norbert

UW-Stevens Points Shelly Maus and Lori Marten spurred a strong defensive performance with career-high efforts as the Pointers rallied from a fifth-game deficit to pull out a non-conference volleyball victory at St. Norbert on Monday in De Pere.

Maus matched a career-best 12 blocks and Marten amassed a career-high 40 digs as the Pointers earned the 30-17, 24-30, 26-30, 30-18, 15-12 victory to avenge a three-game home loss to the Green Knights earlier this season. The Pointers improved to 20-8 overall for the season.

UW-Stevens Point trailed 11-8 in the fifth game and then scored five straight points as Beth Richter had back-to-back kills to give the Pointers a 12-11 lead and then Callie Kunde delivered her 10th kill of the match for a 13-11 advantage. The kill gave Kunde her eighth triple-double of the season as she also totaled 18 assists and 15 digs.

St. Norbert rallied with a kill of its own to cut the deficit to one, but the Pointers came back with another kill by Richter and a kill from Pam Nora to win the match. Nora totaled 13 kills and Richter had eight kills in the victory.

UW-Stevens Point used a 9-0 run to break a 13-13 tie and take control of the first game. St. Norbert also used a nine-point spurt of its own to close out the third game and rally from a 26-21 deficit. The Pointers jumped out to a 10-4 lead to control the fourth game.

Maus had 12 kills in addition to her career-high blocks night and Amanda Mix also keyed the defense, equaling a career-best with 20 digs.

UW-Stevens Point hosts UW-Platteville in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
