Maus Reaches 1,000 as Pointers

Shelly Maus had 17 kills in an opening match
win and added 14 more in a second victory, becoming the fourth
UW-Stevens Point volleyball player to reach 1,000 career kills as the
Pointers swept a triangular on Wednesday at Berg Gym.
The Pointers defeated Beloit in the opening match 30-28, 28-30, 30-28,
30-20 and then prevailed over Lawrence 33-31, 30-26, 30-22 to improve to
14-6 overall for the season. Beloit beat Lawrence in the other match
30-28, 25-30, 30-26, 30-18.
Maus, who now has 1,022 kills in her
three-year career, also had seven blocks against Beloit and four against
Lawrence. She joins Sarah Kuhl, Tara Raddatz and Peggy Hartl as players
to reach the 1,000 mark in UW-Stevens Point�s 34-year volleyball
history.
Against Beloit, the Pointers led the second
game 26-20 before the Buccaneers scored seven straight points to rally
for the win. UW-Stevens Point jumped out to an insurmountable 12-3 lead
to roll to the fourth game win. It was the second time the Pointers have
beaten Beloit in four tight games this year with the losing team scoring
at least 26 points in seven of the eight games.
Callie Kunde added a triple-double in the win
with 11 kills, 26 assists and 12 digs. Gina Guell and Beth Richter each
had 13 kills, while Jill Wittmann had 23 assists and 20 digs and Lori
Marten totaled 24 digs.
The Pointers fought off four game points to
take the opening game against Lawrence with Kunde getting three straight
kills to pull the game to even at 29-29. She finished the match with 11
kills, 27 assists and nine digs. Marten added 28 digs and Wittmann had
15 assists.
UW-Stevens Point will take part in the Viterbo
Tournament this weekend in La Crosse. |
