Pointers Split Dramatic Matches at Stout

It was one exciting finish
after another all weekend long for the UW-Stevens Point volleyball team
as the Pointers went 2-2 at the UW-Stout tournament in Menomonie.
After dropping a pair of
heartbreaking matches in five games on Friday, the Pointers bounced back
on Saturday to rally for a win against Hamline and pull out a gripping
five-game win over Illinois Wesleyan.
All three five-game
matches were decided by two points as the Pointers lost to Dubuque
30-19, 30-27, 28-30, 22-30, 16-14 and Viterbo 30-21, 27-30, 32-30,
18-30, 18-16. After beating Hamline 31-33, 30-26, 30-28, 30-17, the
Pointers edged Illinois Wesleyan 30-28, 24-30, 28-30, 30-26, 15-13.
Shelly Maus had a big
weekend for the Pointers, earning all-tournament honors with 72 kills
and 27 blocks in the four matches. She had 19 kills in the matches
against Hamline and Viterbo, while adding 18 kills and 12 blocks in the
win over Illinois Wesleyan. She had 21 hitting errors and hit .345 for
the tournament.
Kate Banser also had a
strong weekend with 53 kills over the four matches, including 16 kills
with just two errors against Illinois Wesleyan. Toni Johnson had 166
assists with 48 against both Viterbo and Hamline.
The Pointers play
Wednesday at UW-Platteville and need a victory to clinch a spot in the
upcoming Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament.
