Box Score

For the second straight Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match, The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point volleyball team found itself pitted against one of Division III's top teams.

And just like their loss to 10th-ranked UW-Platteville last Wednesday, the young Pointers found it difficult to gain any momentum, dropping a 30-16, 30-19, 30-27 match to 14th-ranked UW-La Crosse.

"The first two games, we made some good plays but we didn't execute consistently," UWSP coach Stacey White said. "That was the difference in the third game. We made some adjustments and our hitters executed. We're still a young team, and it takes experience to do that consistently."

Jessica Freund paced the Eagles (15-3, 4-2 WIAC) with a strong effort, hitting 13 kills on 19 attempts without an error. Tanya Foldy dished out 40 assists, Laura Wagner finished with 12 kills and Lindsey Johnson and Jenny Randall chipped in with 11 digs apiece.

Rachel Kreuser, a former player for Stevens Point Area Senior High School, also added three kills on 12 attempts in the winning effort for La Crosse.

The Pointers (15-8, 1-4 WIAC) did not fare as well in their attacking as the Eagles, connecting on only 33 of 120 attempts (.133 percent).
Nichole Stahovich and Katie Stephenson led UWSP with eight kills apiece.

Toni Johnson recorded 23 assists and seven digs, while Lori Marten added 18 digs to round out the top efforts for the Pointers.

"We need to start out strong right away in matches, before we get too far behind and it is too late," Johnson said. "The first and second games we just didn't get much going, but by the third game, we were playing a lot better."

UWSP will be back in action next week, when it travels to Oshkosh for a 7 p.m. start with the Titans.
