New Optimism, New Coach for Pointers in 2001

A new coach and plenty of fresh faces bring some new optimism to the court for the UW-Stevens Point volleyball team in 2001 as the Pointers look to rebound from a 12-22 record and eighth-place finish in the WIAC last season.

Stacey White, a former UW-River Falls player, takes over a UW-Stevens Point squad that returns three starters. Leading the way are seniors Lucy Fisher, Chrissy Klipstine and Amy Smolcich.

Fisher took over at mid-season as the team's setter and went on to garner team Most Valuable Player honors. Klipstine ranked sixth in the WIAC in hitting percentage at .284 and Smolcich was ninth in the conference with 90 blocks. Also back are juniors Mindy Rockwood, Alicia Schwan and Mary Schultz.

From there, the rest of the positions are wide open as the Pointers look to fill holes with several new players and a group of players who played on the junior varsity squad last season.
