Eagles Vault and Jump to Opening Day Lead at WIAC Women's Outdoor Track and Field

     After day one of the WIAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships the UW-La Crosse women�s team is in first place with 65 points as it looks to win its sixth straight WIAC Championship.

     UW-La Crosse swept the top two spots in both the pole vault and long jump. Angela Hilgers won the pole vault and set a meet record by clearing 3.68 meters. In the long jump, Tricia Clark won with a leap of 5.72 meters for her third title. She had also won the event in 2002 and 2000.

     UW-Stevens Point won three events on Friday and currently sits in second place with 60 points. Kara Vosters won the 10,000 meter run in a time of 38:31.71. In the 3,000 meter steeplechase, Teresa Stanley took first place in a time of 11:19.69. The third event won by the Pointers was the 4x800 meter relay, winning with a time of 9:30.52.

     In third place is UW-Oshkosh, which had two event winners on the first day and has 58 total points. Deena Heins set the meet record in the hammer throw and won with a toss of 55.20 meters. Kay Mikolajczak won the javelin throw knocking off two-time defending champion Becky Clarke of UW-Stevens Point with a throw of 35.30 meters. Clarke finished second at 34.57 meters.

     Action continues with 15 more finals on Saturday.
