Two Meet Records Fall on Opening Day of Men's Competition Two meet records fell on the opening day of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men�s outdoor track and field championships as UW-Stevens Point took the early lead in the team standings after seven events. UW-La Crosse�s Hans Schmidt won the pole vault with a jump of 5.26 meters to eclipse the previous record by one centimeter. Jeremy Wendt of UW-Whitewater also posted a meet record with a hammer throw of 60.66 meters for his second straight victory in the event. UW-Stevens Point had two individual champions in taking the lead in the team standings. Aaron Carley claimed the long jump with a leap of 7.15 meters and Scott Dreger had a winning throw of 56.88 meters to capture the javelin title. The Pointers have 67 points, while UW-Oshkosh is second with 65 points and 12-time defending champion UW-La Crosse sits third with 58 points. UW-Oshkosh also had two event winners in distance events as John LeRoy won the 3000-meter steeplechase in 9:16.93 and David Cisewski won the 10,000-meter run in 30:28.08. UW-La Crosse also won the 4x800-meter relay title with a winning time of 7:39.58. |
