The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point men's and women's track
teams finished their 2005 seasons at the NCAA Division III Outdoor
Championships in Waverly, Iowa. The Pointer women placed 15th, while the
men settled for 34th place in the meet hosted by Wartburg College.
For the women, four Pointers earned all-American honors by finishing
in the top eight nationally. Junior Jenna Mitchler recorded the fastest
qualifying time in the preliminaries of the 1,500 meter run. In the
final, Mitchler placed third in a time of 4:33.25 with teammate Megan
Craig right behind in fifth place in 4:33.66. Liz Goergen had qualified
in both hurdle events and took home a third place finish in the 100
meter hurdles in a time of 14.42 seconds. Senior Julia Slabosheski
finished her Pointer career as an all-American, with a sixth place
effort in the discus, throwing 42.51 meters (139' 5'').
On the men's side, senior Mark LaLonde accounted for all of the
Pointers' points, placing in two events. LaLonde earned a fifth place
finish in the 3,000 meter steeplechase in a time of 9:12.72. He also
earned all-American status in the 5,000 meter run placing sixth in
14:47.70. Sophomores Mitch Ellis and Kyle Steiner had the Pointers next
best finishes, with Ellis placing ninth in the high jump, clearing 1.98
meters (6' 6'') and Steiner ninth in decathlon scoring 6,619 points.
Host school Wartburg College won the women's team title edging
defending champion UW-Oshkosh and Calvin College (Mich.) by one point.
For the men, Lincoln University (Pa.) ended UW-La Crosse's streak of
four consecutive titles.
