Pointer Track Teams Wrap-Up Season at Nationals

The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point men's and women's track teams finished their 2005 seasons at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Championships in Waverly, Iowa. The Pointer women placed 15th, while the men settled for 34th place in the meet hosted by Wartburg College.

For the women, four Pointers earned all-American honors by finishing in the top eight nationally. Junior Jenna Mitchler recorded the fastest qualifying time in the preliminaries of the 1,500 meter run. In the final, Mitchler placed third in a time of 4:33.25 with teammate Megan Craig right behind in fifth place in 4:33.66. Liz Goergen had qualified in both hurdle events and took home a third place finish in the 100 meter hurdles in a time of 14.42 seconds. Senior Julia Slabosheski finished her Pointer career as an all-American, with a sixth place effort in the discus, throwing 42.51 meters (139' 5'').

On the men's side, senior Mark LaLonde accounted for all of the Pointers' points, placing in two events. LaLonde earned a fifth place finish in the 3,000 meter steeplechase in a time of 9:12.72. He also earned all-American status in the 5,000 meter run placing sixth in 14:47.70. Sophomores Mitch Ellis and Kyle Steiner had the Pointers next best finishes, with Ellis placing ninth in the high jump, clearing 1.98 meters (6' 6'') and Steiner ninth in decathlon scoring 6,619 points.

Host school Wartburg College won the women's team title edging defending champion UW-Oshkosh and Calvin College (Mich.) by one point. For the men, Lincoln University (Pa.) ended UW-La Crosse's streak of four consecutive titles.
