Balanced Attack Keys Pointers' Sweep of Eagles

A balanced hitting attack erupted for 19 runs and 26 hits as UW-Stevens Point posted a softball doubleheader sweep at UW-La Crosse on Wednesday.

The Pointers tallied a 9-1 victory in the opening game and then used a six-run fifth inning to pull away for a 10-4 win in the second game and improve to 21-5 overall and 6-2 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. UW-La Crosse fell to 8-15 overall and 1-5 in the conference. Every starter had at least one hit in each game for the Pointers.

Stephanie Anderson allowed just four hits and struck out six with no walks in the opening game. She delivered a first inning sacrifice fly to go with a run-scoring single by Korryn Brooks for an early 2-0 lead. Mandy Jellish added a two-run single in the second inning for a 4-0 lead.

UW-La Crosses Cara Salm led off the fourth inning with a home run for her teams only run, but the Pointers put the game away with a five-run seventh inning, getting a two-run single by Anderson followed by a three-run homer from Sarah Phillips.

The second game was tied 3-3 before the Pointers big fifth inning. Anderson and Phillips hit consecutive run-scoring doubles to start the rally and Jackie Berger finished the inning with a two-run single. Berger also had a two-run single that put the Pointers ahead 3-1 in the top of the fourth before UW-La Crosses Sarah Pfeifer hit a two-run double in the bottom of the inning to tie the game.

Jellish was three-for-five and Melissa Boldt was two-for-four in the second game for UW-Stevens Point, which totaled 14 hits in the win. Hope Krause pitched a complete game to earn the victory for the Pointers.
