Donohoo's Goal Lifts
Pointers into WIAC Tournament Final
Box Score
Mary Donohoo wasted no time making an impact
for the UW-Stevens Point womens soccer team in Fridays Wisconsin
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference semifinal match against UW-River
Falls.
The freshman midfielder checked into the match
midway through the second half and scored the only goal just 25 seconds
later as the Pointers posted a 1-0 victory over UW-River Falls at the
Pointer Soccer Bowl. UW-Stevens Point has now reached the finals of all
13 WIAC tournaments and improved to 33-1 all-time in tournament play.
The Pointers will take on UW-Oshkosh or UW-Stout on Saturday at 1 p.m.
Donohoo stood wide open two yards inside the
top of the penalty box and took a pass from freshman Kimie Wiepz before
drilling a perfect shot on the far side of the goal.
The ball hit off the inside of the post and landed in the back of
the net.
After an evenly played first half where
neither team created many scoring opportunities, UW-Stevens Point got
the wind at its back and took over in the second half. UW-River Falls
took the opening kickoff and had a shot attempt 36 seconds into the
period, but UW-Stevens Point had the final 16 shots of the match. The
Pointers held a 20-3 advantage in shots for the match after a 4-2 edge
at halftime.
UW-River Falls pushed up late in the match and
came close to forming scoring chances, but the Pointers defense stood
tough and did not allow any shot attempts. Senior Melissa Becker
controlled the midfield for the Pointers throughout the match, stopping
several UW-River Falls attacks. In fact, the Falcons had three shots
for the match, but had a great scoring chance four minutes into the
match when a wide open look for Amy Jensen sailed just above the
crossbar. UW-River Falls did not have a shot on goal in the contest.
Falcons goalie Hannah Tvedt made 10 saves for
the Falcons, who have been shutout only twice all year with the other
coming less than two weeks ago in a 6-0 loss at UW-Stevens Point. The
Pointers beat the Falcons 2-1 in overtime in last years WIAC tournament
championship match.
The victory was UW-Stevens Points seventh
overall and its 20th straight conference tournament win.
