2002 WIAC Womens Soccer
Tournament Preview
About the
only thing different about this years version of the Wisconsin
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference womens soccer tournament is that
the competition will be held a week later than previous years.
Otherwise,
its a familiar look to the eight-team field as the top three seeds are
the same as last year and four teams hold the exact same seeding as the
previous season. UW-Stevens Point is also the top seed for the 11th time
in as many tournaments and could host the semifinals and finals on Nov.
8-9 with a victory in its quarterfinal match Tuesday against
UW-Platteville.
UW-Stevens
Point is the five-time defending tournament champion and has won nine
of the 10 all-time postseason affairs. The Pointers enter the tournament
coming off their first-ever undefeated regular season with a 14-0-2
overall record and an all-time high No. 2 NCAA Division III ranking.
Leading the
way for the Pointers for the second straight year is junior Kelly Fink
with 20 goals and five assists. Senior Molly Cady leads the WIAC in
assists per game while posting eight goals and eight assists. Junior Jenny
Bruce tied a tournament record with five assists in last years event
and ranks second on the team with eight goals and four assists this
season.
UW-Eau
Claire earned its first-ever Division III ranking this season, landing
as high as No. 20 in the rankings two weeks ago. The Blugolds are 15-3-1
overall and are led by senior Jullia Powell, who ranks third in the
conference with 16 goals and eight assists. Sophomore Kris Unterweger has
11 goals and five assists. The Blugolds are still looking for their first
WIAC tournament title, having advanced to the championship match in seven
of the previous 10 tournaments.
UW-Oshkosh
has played its best soccer in the second half of the season, posting a 7-2
record with seven shutouts over its final nine matches to bring a 9-9-1
record into the postseason. The Titans opened the WIAC season 0-3-1, but
won their last four conference matches to gain the third seed.
Freshman Anna
Weickhardt leads the Titans with 10 goals and one assist. Senior defender
Carrie Gilbert was a third-team All-America selection last season.
UW-Oshkosh has advanced to the semifinals the past two seasons.
UW-River
Falls features record-setting junior forward Amy Gilfillan, who scored
33 of her teams 59 goals this season to set a WIAC single-season
record. She had goals in all but three matches this season as the Falcons
tied a school record for wins with a 12-4-2 record, including a nine-match
unbeaten streak at mid-season. Freshman Erin Pinewski has added eight
goals and nine assists.
UW-Whitewater
is the only team to shutout UW-River Falls this season and carries a
10-7-1 record into its first-round match with the Falcons. The Warhawks
advanced to the semifinals as the fifth seed last year and are led by
senior Dani Daggett with 16 goals and four assists this season. Senior
Wendy Scott has eight goals and one assist.
UW-Stout
set a WIAC record for ties while posting a 7-4-5 record, including a 2-2-4
conference mark. The Blue Devils tied four of the five teams ahead of them
in the WIAC standings and allowed more than two goals in a match just once
this season. Senior Nellie Sivertsen is the teams leading scorer with
12 goals and four assists. Freshman Kelly Stolarczyk has 10 goals all
in the final eight matches of the season.
UW-La
Crosse has a 6-11 overall record, but has outscored its opponents
41-28 this season, suffering five of its 10 losses by one goal and four
others by two goals. Sophomore Julie Taylor, an all-WIAC performer last
season, leads the Eagles with eight goals and four assists.
UW-Platteville
faces UW-Stevens Point in the quarterfinals for the sixth straight year
and brings a 2-15 record into the tournament. Sophomore Jessi Jones leads
