NCAA Division III Womens Soccer Regional Nov. 16, 2002

UW-Stevens Point 5, Loras 2

UW-Stevens Point scored five unanswered goals to advance to its third straight NCAA Division III womens soccer regional championship match with a 5-2 victory over Loras Saturday in Stevens Point.

The Pointers will meet St. Thomas in the title match Sunday at 1 p.m. for a berth in the national quarterfinals. UW-Stevens Point lost to Wheaton (Ill.) in last years regional final and beat the Thunder in the 2000 regionals.

Loras struck first in Saturdays match as Michelle Wieser lofted a corner kick that Jenni Wilberding headed in at the 12:02 mark. However, it took the Pointers just 22 seconds to counter as Kelly Fink dribbled down the right side of the field and centered a pass to Emma-klara Porter, who drilled a shot straight on from 15 yards to tie the match.

Less than eight minutes later, Fink had a long throw-in that Andrea Oswald headed in to give the Pointers a 2-1 lead. Fink added another goal at the 35:03 mark on a breakaway when she sent a shot from 25 yards out that landed just inside the post for a 3-1 lead.

The early frantic pace finally slowed before halftime and in the first 15 minutes of the second half before the Pointers struck again on a cross by Jenny Bruce that Porter headed in to give UW-Stevens Point a 4-1 lead. At the 67:58 mark, Oswald had a shot that was stopped by a Loras defenders hand. Molly Cady put in the ensuing penalty kick for a 5-1 advantage.

The Duhawks rallied less than two minutes later as Wieser scored off an assist from Rodie Doar at the 69:13 mark to finish the scoring.

UW-Stevens Point held a 19-8 advantage in shots, including a 10-3 edge in the first half. Erin Hall had six saves for the Duhawks, who finished 18-5 overall. The Pointers are ranked No. 2 in the latest NCAA Division III poll and ran their home unbeaten streak to 29 matches. UW-Stevens Point is now 52-3-2 over its last 57 matches.
