UW-Stevens Point Advances to 10th Consecutive WIAC Finals

Box Score

UW-Stevens Point advanced to its 10th consecutive Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament championship match with a 3-0 semifinal win over UW-Whitewater Friday at the Pointer Soccer Bowl.

The Pointers have won eight of the previous nine tournament titles and will now face UW-Eau Claire or UW-Oshkosh in the title match Saturday at 1 p.m. The victory was the seventh straight for the Pointers, who are now 16-1 overall and ranked ninth in the NCAA Division III rankings.

Stevens Point native Sarah Menzel lofted a long ball from 30 yards out to score her first career goal 33:12 into the match and put the Pointers ahead. Molly Cady headed in a free kick from Andrea Spiel to give UW-Stevens Point a 2-0 lead just four minutes later.

The Pointers finished the scoring just three minutes into the second half when Jenny Bruce sent a cross in front that Mickey Jacob deflected to Kelly Fink for Finks 22nd goal of the season.

The Pointers outshot the Warhawks 28-2, including a 15-0 margin in the first half with a strong wind at their backs. UW-Stevens Point is now 26-1 all-time in WIAC tournament matches and extended their WIAC winning streak to 54 matches, which is one short of the NCAA all-divisions record held by North Carolina from 1994-2000.
