NCAA Division III Womens Soccer First Round Nov. 1, 2000

Cady Sets NCAA Tournament Assists Record as Pointers Roll Past Edgewood

Molly Cady had an NCAA all-divisions tournament record with five assists as the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point rolled past Edgewood College 7-0 in the first round of the NCAA Division III women's soccer tournament Wednesday at the Pointer Soccer Bowl.

The Pointers' seven goals also tied the previous record for most scored in a Division III tournament game, however, Lynchburg (Va.) had broken the record earlier in the day, scoring nine goals Wednesday in a 9-0 win over Beaver (Pa.).Picture (402x606, 57.5Kb)

Cady, who played prep soccer at Monona Grove High School, tied a Pointers' all-time single-game record with her five assists. She eclipsed the Division III tournament record of three assists held by several players. The all-divisions tournament record of four assists was shared by U.S. World Cup team member Cindy Parlow in 1997 for North Carolina, and by Michelle Cox of Lynn (Fla.) in 1998.

The victory gave the Pointers their school-record tying 19th victory of the season as they improved to 19-4 and won their 13th straight match.

Cady's assists all went to Marie Muhvic and Jenny Bruce, who each scored three goals for the Pointers. Muhvic gave the Pointers a 1-0 lead just 7:01 into the match with an assist from Bruce. Margaret Domka then started a string of three goals in four minutes with a 45-yard free kick that sailed over the head of Eagles' goalkeeper Meghan Magner. Cady fed Bruce for two more goals to push the Pointers' halftime lead to 4-0.

Muhvic scored two second half goals and Bruce added another - all assisted by Cady - in the second half to finish the scoring. Muhvic now has 29 goals and 12 assists for the season. She has 73 goals in her career and is just the 24th player in Division III history to reach that mark, despite playing just three seasons.

UW-Stevens Point outshot the Eagles and handed Edgewood two of its five losses this season as the Eagles finished 17-5 overall.

The Pointers will travel to Wheaton, Ill. Friday to face Macalester (Minn.) in the regional semifinals at noon. William Penn (Iowa) will meet Wheaton in the second game at 3 p.m.
