WIAC Soccer Championship Preview For the eighth straight year, Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference womens soccer teams are pondering the same question: Can anyone beat UW-Stevens Point? Thats again the question this year as the Pointers rolled through the conferences regular season outscoring their opponents 46-1 and outshooting teams by a combined 252-32 for their eighth consecutive undefeated WIAC regular season. But, unfortunately for WIAC opponents, the Pointers could have the conferences championship wrapped up before the semifinals. A quarterfinal win would give the Pointers a share of the title based on the conferences new format which gives three points for every regular season and tournament win and one point for a regular season tie. However, the Pointers are still out to defend the prestigious WIAC tournament crown which theyve claimed in six of the previous seven tournaments. UW-Stevens Point is led by eight seniors, but offensively, its junior Marie Muhvic, who is leading the team in scoring for the second straight year. Muhvic has 16 goals and six assists for 38 points in 17 games this season. Senior Jennifer Davis also leads the league in assists for the second straight year. UW-Stevens Point was ranked 19th in last weeks NCAA Division III poll and enters the tournament with a 14-3 overall record. UW-River Falls was the only team to score against the Pointers this season and brings the No. 2 seed into the tournament, looking for its first-ever title. Falcons senior Kate Pelinka has 16 goals and six assists in 18 games played. UW-River Falls posted an impressive 6-2 conference mark after a 2-3-3 sixth place finish last year. The only other WIAC team to win the title, UW-La Crosse is the third seed. The Eagles are led by senior forward Jenny Tischaefer, who scored five goals against UW-Superior last weekend and finished as the WIAC scoring leader with 16 goals and four assists in just 15 games. UW-Eau Claire suffered a tough stretch in early October with a 2-3-1 record over six matches. However, the Blugolds are back, posting shutouts in their last three WIAC games before losing to St. Marys 2-1 in overtime Sunday. Kari Blasczyk leads the team with 11 goals and five assists. UW-Stout finished the season strong with a 1-0 win over UW-Whitewater in the season finale to gain the fifth seed for the second straight year. The Blue Devils are led in scoring by Nellie Sivertsen with 14 goals and three assists. A strong defense could keep UW-Whitewater in the hunt for the title. The Warhawks have one of their best teams in school history, holding opponents to a total of 14 goals this season, while setting a school record for wins in a season. The Warhawks won nine straight games before losing to UW-Stout Saturday. UW-Oshkosh is the seventh seed for the second straight year, while UW-Platteville and UW-Superior are meeting in the play-in game for the fourth consecutive season. |
