POINTER NOTES

Boelk Sweeps WIAC Coach of the Year Honors; Eloranta Named Top Swimmer

After leading UW-Stevens Point to its sixth consecutive Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference mens swimming and diving title and nearly dethroning three-time defending champion UW-La Crosse on the womens side, Pointers coach Al Boelk has been named both the mens and womens WIAC Coach of the Year.

It is the third time in Boelks eight-year career that he has won both awards in the same year. The mens award was already the sixth of Boelks career and the third straight year he has been honored. Boelk shared the womens honor with UW-Eau Claire coach Rob Welcher while winning the honor for the third time.

In addition, Pointers junior Tyler Eloranta was named the WIAC Swimmer of the Meet from last weekends competition. The freestyler from Pewaukee won all seven of his events, claiming the 50-yard, 100-yard and 200-yard freestyle events. He also swam on four winning relays, taking the 200-yard freestyle, 400-yard freestyle, 800-yard freestyle and 400-yard medley.

The Pointer men easily won the title by 315 points over runner-up UW-La Crosse. The Pointer women fell short by 50.5 points, marking the fourth straight year they have been with 51 points of the first place Eagles.

Womens Distance Medley Relay Team Shares WIAC Athlete of the Week Award

The UW-Stevens Point foursome of Ashleigh Potuznik, Marie Burrows, Jenna Mitchler and Megan Craig shared the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference womens indoor track and field Athlete of the Week award after running the second-fastest distance medley relay in Division III last weekend in Oshkosh.

The team had an NCAA championships provisional qualifying time of 11:59.57 while winning the event as the Pointers took second in the eight-team UW-Oshkosh Invitational.

Potuznik is a junior from Baraboo, Burrows is a sophomore from Menomonee Falls, Mitchler is a junior from Kaukauna and Craig is a senior from Bangor.
