Baseball, Softball Schedules Continue to
Change
With
the recent snowfall, the UW-Stevens Point baseball team had its fourth
straight day of games postponed on Tuesday and the Pointers have also
changed their plans for the upcoming weekend. UW-Stevens Point was scheduled to host St.
Norbert on Tuesday, but the games have been rescheduled for Tues., April 9
at 1 p.m. at Lookout Park. Also, this weekend�s WIAC-opening series
against UW-River Falls has been moved to Stevens Point. The games will be
the Pointers� first home games of the season and will begin Saturday and
Sunday at noon each day. The Pointers� softball team had its games
with UW-Platteville postponed on Tuesday as well. The two teams will open
their conference schedule Mon., April 8 at 3 p.m. at McCarty Field in
Stevens Point. The softball team will be heading the right
direction this weekend with four games in Illinois. The Pointers play the
University of Chicago on Friday and Aurora on Saturday.
Van Wychen, Briski, LaLonde Earn WIAC Athlete of the
Week Honors
UW-Stevens
Point landed both the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference softball
Position Player and Pitcher of the Week after finishing 7-4 on its spring
trip to Fort Myers, Fla. Junior centerfielder Jill Van Wychen
was named the league�s Position Player of the Week, while sophomore Jeanann
Briski was the Pitcher of the Week. Also, sophomore Mark LaLonde was
named the conference�s men�s outdoor track Athlete of the Week.
Van Wychen, a Kaukauna native and former Freedom High School
standout, hit .559 (19-for-34) for the week with 12 runs scored and five
RBI�s. She had seven multiple hit games among the 10 games she played in
Florida.
Briski, a Berlin native and Berlin High School graduate, finished
with a 1.14 earned run average and 2-0 record for the week. She pitched a
perfect game in her first collegiate start, beating Cardinal Stritch 9-0.
For the week, she pitched 12 1/3 innings, allowing two earned runs and six
hits. She had nine strikeouts and two walks.
LaLonde, a Park Falls native and Park Falls High School graduate,
provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division III outdoor championships as
the top collegiate finisher in the 5,000 meter run at last week�s Big Cat
Classic in Memphis, Tenn. with a time of 14:41.33. |
