Juno Earns Second Verizon Academic All-American
Award
For
the second time during the 2000-01 school year, University of
Wisconsin-Stevens Point senior Leah Juno has been selected as a Verizon
Academic All-American. Juno was most recently honored as a second-team
selection in track and field after garnering third-team honors in cross
country last fall.
The squad includes all NCAA Division II,
NCAA Division III and NAIA athletes in spring sports besides softball.
Sports included are women's track and field, lacrosse, tennis and golf.
Each team includes 15 student-athletes.
A Brillion native, Juno holds a 3.86 grade
point average with a double major in Computer Information Systems and
Mathematics. Of the 45 student-athletes honored, 35 had over a 3.90 GPA.
There were 14 athletes with perfect 4.0 GPA's.
Juno's second selection gives UW-Stevens
Point four Academic All-Americans this season and 10 in the past two
years. Soccer players Marie Muhvic and Margaret Domka were both honored
last fall.
UW-Stevens Point had three Academic
All-American selections in its history before 1999-2000. Juno joins Dan
Schwamberger, who was honored in both cross country and track and field
last season, as the only two-time Academic All-Americans in UW-Stevens
Point history.
Juno is a three-time NCAA Division III
champion in the 800 meters, winning outdoor titles in 2000 and 2001 to
become the first Pointer female to win back-to-back titles in the same
event. She also won the indoor national championship in 2001 and led the
Pointers to their highest-ever national finish at fourth place.
Juno also has won the Wisconsin
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference outdoor 800 meters titles the past two
seasons and won the indoor 1,500 meter championship this season.
Juno was a team captain in both track and
field and cross country, while also serving as Vice President of the
Student Athlete Advisory Committee. She helped coordinate the group's
community clean-up activities and the university's community athletic
carnival. Juno graduated in May and is now employed at Kimberly-Clark
Corporation.
