Juno Earns Fifth WIAC Athlete of the Week Award in 2000-01

     UW-Stevens Point track athlete Leah Juno has been selected as a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Athlete of the Week for the fifth time during the 2000-01 season as this week's outdoor track Athlete of the Week.

     Juno was honored twice during the cross country season and twice during the indoor season. She earned her latest honor after qualifying for the NCAA Division III outdoor nationals with an automatic qualifying time at the North Central College Invitational in Naperville, Ill. last weekend.

     Juno, a Brillion native, and a Brillion High School graduate, qualified in the 800 meters with a time of 2:12.29. Juno�s time is the best in the country in the event this season, and helped the Pointers capture second place in the invite.

Guckenberger Earns WIAC Honor After Lowering Season ERA to 0.32

     UW-Stevens Point's Karen Guckenberger has been named the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference East Division softball Player of the Week after lowering her earned run average even further with 24 more innings without allowing an earned run last week.

     The sophomore has posted incredible numbers this season with a 0.32 earned run average and a current streak of 37 2/3 innings without allowing an earned run. The South Milwaukee native and former South Milwaukee High School standout has held opponents to a .142 batting average in 65 2/3 innings pitched.

     Last week, she pitched 24 innings and had 25 strikeouts and two walks.

     Saturday, she threw a complete game three-hitter, allowed one unearned run, and struck out seven to earn a win over 18^th-ranked University of Chicago. In game two, she picked up the win in relief pitching two perfect innings and striking out three.

     Guckenberger has given up only 33 hits, including just five for extra bases. In fact, opponents have hit just nine fly balls off her all season with none going to left field.
