Softball and Baseball Begin Northern Seasons Following Strong Trips

It's back to the cold weather this weekend for the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point softball and baseball teams as the Pointers return home from Florida to begin the northern part of their schedules.

The Pointer softball team had a very promising start under first-year coach Ali Brian, posting an 8-1 record last week in Fort Myers, Fla. The baseball team also had a successful debut with an 8-3 mark against a challenging schedule.

The softball team resumes action Friday at Concordia (Wis.) with a doubleheader at 3 p.m. The baseball team will have four home games this weekend, taking on Marian in a doubleheader on Saturday at noon and Northland in a twin bill on Sunday at noon.

In softball, the Pointers had all-around impressive numbers with a .322 team batting average and .964 team fielding percentage. Pitchers Karen Guckenberger and Nicki Bertram also held opponents to a .186 batting average while posting a combined 1.24 earned run average.

Guckenberger had the highlight of the week with a no-hitter against Division II Franklin Pierce (N.H.). She finished 3-1 with three saves and a 0.66 earned run average. Guckenberger suffered the only loss of the week, despite a three-hitter and no earned runs allowed in a 2-0 loss to North Central (Ill.). Bertram pitched a one-hitter in a win over Aurora (Ill.).

Seniors Sarah Berg, Kelly Rutta and Cari Briley provided most of the offensive punch as the trio combined for 37 of the team's 79 hits and 23 of their 46 runs. Berg hit .538 and earned Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference East Division Player of the Week honors. Rutta hit .444 and Briley hit .393.

In baseball, the Pointers did most of their work in come-from-behind fashion, rallying for victories in five of their eight wins, including four rallies in the seventh inning. The Pointers scored four runs to tie fourth-ranked Allegheny (Pa.) and send the game to extra innings before a 7-6 victory, scored three runs to beat Macalester (Minn.) 8-7 and scored three runs to beat sixth-ranked Rowan (N.J.) 7-5. UW-Stevens Point also scored a seventh inning run to beat Fontbonne (Mo.) 10-9.

Jon Jagler had a big week for the Pointers with a .450 batting average, going 18-for-40 with five doubles and 14 RBI's. Mike McCann and Sam Molski each went 13-for-33 to finish with .394 averages.

Jeff Pieper was the Pointers' top pitcher with a 2-0 record and 1.29 earned run average. Eric Schlender also picked up two victories in relief and Jared Szews had two saves.
