Verbrick Named WIAC Baseball Pitcher of the Week
For the third time in four weeks,
UW-Stevens Point has landed the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference baseball pitcher of the week as Bill Verbrick is the latest
Pointer hurler to earn the honor.
Verbrick became just the fifth pitcher in
Pointer history to pitch 10 innings in a game and fired a complete game in a
6-5 victory over UW-Stout on Friday. He struck out 13 batters, which is the
second-highest single-game total in school history, trailing only Bill Kuse,
who struck out 14 batters against UW-Milwaukee in 1961.
Verbrick is now 3-2 for the season with a
4.56 earned run average. He leads the Pointers with 47 1/3 innings pitched
and has 46 strikeouts with just four walks for the season.
Troy Bielmeier was the league's Pitcher of
the Week April 2-8 and Jason Kozelek won the award for the week of March
26-April 1.
The Pointers are currently 21-8 overall and 4-2 in the WIAC.
UW-Stevens Point has eight league games remaining as the Pointers aim for
their third straight WIAC title.
