Molski, Jagler Named to All-WIAC Baseball
First-team
The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point
landed two players on the All-Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference baseball first-team as senior rightfielder Sam
Molski and junior first baseman Jon
Jagler both were honored.
Both players are former Wisconsin Valley
Conference prep standouts as Molski starred at Stevens Point Area Senior
High School and Jagler played at Wausau West High School.
Despite winning the WIAC tournament title,
the Pointers had just two of the 21 players named to the league's first
team. It marks the 28th consecutive year the Pointers have had
at least two players on the team, but only the sixth time in the past 25
years they've had fewer than three players selected.
However, six UW-Stevens Point players
received honorable mention. Those honored included senior catcher Eric Bennett (Madison, WI/Memorial), senior shortstop Pat
McCann (Antigo, WI/Antigo), junior third baseman Paul
Molitor (Reedsburg, WI/Reedsburg), sophomore pitcher Jeff Pieper (Wausau, WI/West), junior centerfielder Randy
Reed (Appleton, WI/East) and junior pitcher Bill
Verbrick (Appleton, WI/Xavier).
Molski hit a single-season school record 12
home runs this season while hitting for a .371 average, entering this
weekend's NCAA Division III tournament. Molski also has nine doubles and
three triples to rank fifth in a single season with 103 total bases. He
has scored 38 runs and driven in 38 runs for his first career
All-Conference selection after earning honorable mention recognition the
past three years.
Jagler has pounded out 64 hits this season,
which ranks third in a single season. He has posted team-highs 12 doubles,
43 RBI's and .408 batting average. Jagler had a 14-game hitting streak
earlier this season and has hit in 12 straight games entering this
weekend. He went 11-for-21 in last weekend's conference tournament.
Bennett hit .284 with three home runs and
has thrown out nine of the last 10 attempted base stealers. McCann hit
.323 with five home runs and 32 RBI's. Molitor hit .313 with 11 doubles
and six home runs. Pieper is 7-0 this season with a team-best 3.10 ERA. He
32 strikeouts with just seven walks in 61 innings pitched. Reed hit .352
with six home runs and a school-record four triples. Verbrick is 4-3 with
a 4.18 ERA and has 54 strikeouts and five walks in 66 2/3 innings pitched.
The Pointers open NCAA tournament play
Thursday at 11 a.m. against Ripon College at E.J. Schneider Field in
Oshkosh.
