Pointers Run Winning Streak to Six Games With River City Classic Sweep Justin Duerkop pitched a six-hit shutout in the opener and Sam Molski drilled a three-run homer in the second game to lead the UW-Stevens Point baseball team to a sweep of games Friday at the River City Classic, running the Pointers winning streak to six games. UW-Stevens Point beat Viterbo 3-0 in La Crosse in the first game and beat Division II Winona State 6-2 in Winona, Minn. in the second game to improve to 10-3 for the season. Duerkop struck out three and walked none in the win over Viterbo (13-9), which was coming off a victory over Marietta (Ohio), the top ranked team in Division III. UW-Stevens Point opened the scoring in the top of the first inning when Mike McCann led off with a double and Jon Jagler followed with an RBI single. The Pointers added single runs in the third and fourth innings when Pat McCann hit a two-out, run-scoring single in the third and Randy Reed added an RBI single in the fourth. Mike McCann finished two-for-four and Pat McCann was three-for-four. In the second game, UW-Stevens Point jumped out to a 5-0 lead with a five-run second inning outburst. Matt Peetz led off the inning with a walk and moved to third on a double by Ryan Ivy. Reed and Jagler followed with RBI singles and Molski hit a three-run home run. Winona State (10-8), which swept Division I Iowa State on Tuesday, scored two runs in the top of the fourth, but the Pointers added a run in the bottom of the inning on a run-scoring double by Molski, who finished two-for-three. |
