Pitching Leads Baseball Team to Split With 15th Ranked Ohio Wesleyan Justin Duerkop fired a four-hitter in the opener and Bill Verbrick surrendered just one run in the nightcap, but the UW-Stevens Point baseball team managed just a split with Ohio Wesleyan, winning 7-1 and losing 1-0 Tuesday in Fort Myers, Fla. The Pointers, who are ranked 21st in the country, used a five-run second inning to take control in the first game. However, the 15th ranked Battling Bishops used a 12-strikeout performance from Dan Marchetti to shutout UW-Stevens Point in the second game and drop the Pointers to 3-2 for the week. In the opener, Ohio Wesleyan scored in the first inning before Mike McCanns two-run single and Jon Jaglers two-run triple highlighted the big second inning for the Pointers. McCann finished two-for-three and Jagler was two-for-four as the Pointers totaled 10 hits. Ohio Wesleyans Joe Loudenslage knocked home the only run of the second game with a two-out line drive single off Verbrick to score the runner from third base in the top of the third inning. McCann, who had two of the Pointers four hits, led off the bottom of the seventh with a single and moved to third on a passed ball and wild pitch with one out. However, Marchetti forced a strikeout and a groundout to end the game. Verbrick struck out six and walked one in a complete game effort. UW-Stevens Point is off Wednesday and returns to action Thursday with a doubleheader against Rhode Island College. |
