Rutta Named First-team All-Region in Softball; Three Named Second-Team

UW-Stevens Point junior Kelly Rutta highlighted four Pointers named to the All-Great Lakes Region softball team as the lone first-team selection.

Rutta, a former Stevens Point Pacelli High School standout, hit .361 for the season and set a single-season school record with 11 stolen bases. She led the team with 33 runs scored, five home runs and 78 total bases. Rutta also posted a .968 fielding percentage and started every game this season at second base.

Three other Pointers were named to the second team, including senior catcher Michelle Gerber (Kenosha, Wis./Bradford) for the second straight year. Junior outfielder Cari Briley (Creston, Iowa) and freshman pitcher Karen Guckenberger (South Milwaukee, Wis.) were also second-team performers.

UW-Stevens Point’s four selections on the first two teams were the most of any school. The Pointers finished 28-13-1 overall and in second place in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference this past season.

Gerber had just two errors all season while starting 40 of the 41 games at catcher. She hit .352 with 26 RBI’s and had 12 doubles to finish the season with a UW-Stevens Point career record of 34 doubles.

Briley led the Pointers in hitting with a .368 batting average and 50 hits. She had 19 RBI’s and 10 stolen bases while starting every game in rightfield.

Guckenberger had one of the most outstanding debuts of any freshman pitcher in NCAA history with a 12-0 record and 33 consecutive scoreless innings to open the season. She finished the year with a 17-3 record and 1.28 ERA. She had 114 strikeouts, which is the second-highest single-season total in Pointer history, along with just 17 walks in 136 2/3 innings pitched.

Bielmeier, McCann Earn Second-Team Baseball All-Region Honors

Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tri-champion UW-Stevens Point landed two players on the All-Midwest Region baseball team as junior pitcher Troy Bielmeier and sophomore shortstop Pat McCann each garnered second-team honors.

Bielmeier, a Wautoma native, led the league in earned run average and pitched a league-high three shutouts. He finished the season with a 1.19 ERA and was 6-1 with 35 strikeouts and eight walks in 60 1/3 innings pitched.

The Pointers finished in a three-way tie for the WIAC title with UW-La Crosse and UW-Whitewater. UW-Stevens Point was 28-11 overall for the season.
