UW-Stevens Point Leads State Schools in Division III Sears Cup Standings

UW-Stevens Point completed the 1999-2000 school year as the highest ranked Wisconsin school in the NCAA Division III Sears Cup Standings with an eighth place finish.

The Sears Cup measures the top overall athletic program in the country based on NCAA tournament finishes. The Pointers participated in NCAA tournaments in 12 of their 19 sports and won seven Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference titles during the past season.

UW-Stevens Point was ranked second in the standings following the winter season, but the Pointers’ baseball and softball teams both lost in the WIAC championship games and were denied NCAA tournament bids.

UW-Stevens Point had 548 points, which edged ninth place UW-Eau Claire by three points. The Pointers were also just 38 points behind fourth place St. Thomas (Minn.), which had 586 points. Williams (Mass.) won the trophy for the fourth time in five years with a whopping 849 points.

The WIAC was well-represented in the standings with four schools in the top 15. UW-La Crosse placed 11th and UW-Whitewater finished 15th.
