Pointers Split Games to Finish 3-1 at UW-River Falls Tournament

Cari Briley singled home Kelly Rutta with the winning run in the top of the eighth inning as the UW-Stevens Point softball team beat UW-Stout 6-5 Sunday to force a split of its games at the UW-River Falls tournament.

The Pointers lost their opening game of the day 6-0 to UW-Eau Claire to finish the weekend 3-1. UW-Stevens Point is now 23-11-1 overall and completes its regular season schedule Monday at Marian College in Fond du Lac.

Jamie Lowney was the winning pitcher against UW-Stout, beating the Blue Devils for the second straight day. Lowney, who threw a two-hit shutout on Saturday, struck out five and walked none in the complete game victory Sunday.

The Pointers jumped out to a 5-2 lead with three runs in the fourth inning. Kimberly Grubba singled home one run and scored on a sacrifice fly by Nikki Best. Sarah Grubba scored on a two-out error as four of the Pointers’ six runs were unearned.

UW-Stout rallied with two runs in the bottom of the fourth and the Blue Devils’ Cara Fenhouse tied the game with a two-out single in the bottom of the seventh. However, Lowney struck out the next batter to leave runners stranded at first and third.

Rutta was placed on second to open the eighth and Briley led off the inning with a run-scoring single for the game-winner. Lowney retired all three batters in the bottom of the eighth.

In the opener, UW-Eau Claire scored two runs in both the first and second innings to jump out to a 4-0 lead. Blugolds’ pitcher Heidi Bergstrom limited the Pointers to just four hits. UW-Stevens Point had its only walk and two of its four hits in the first inning, but left the bases loaded.

Karen Guckenberger suffered just her third loss of the season for the Pointers, giving up 12 hits and six earned runs to fall to 14-3 for the year.
