Bielmeier, Guckenberger Named Top WIAC Pitchers of the Week The key to the UW-Stevens Point baseball and softball teams trips to Florida last week was pitching and that fact was reflected in the Pointers earning both Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Pitchers of the Week. Troy Bielmeier, a junior from Wautoma, was the baseball selection after posting a pair of shutouts against Illinois College and Rhode Island College last week. Karen Guckenberger, a freshman from South Milwaukee, opened her UW-Stevens Point career with 22 scoreless innings and a 3-0 record. The conference selects both a position player and pitcher of the week for both baseball and softball. Bielmeier fired a two-hitter with six strikeouts against Illinois College and followed that performance by limiting Rhode Island College to five hits and one walk, while striking out four. For the two games, opponents hit just .159 off Bielmeier. The Pointers were ranked 21st in the NCAA Division III preseason poll and went 8-3 for the week. Bielmeier led a squad that outscored opponents 69-19 and finished with a 1.78 team earned run average. Guckenberger blanked Georgetown (Ky.) 7-0 in her first collegiate start, firing a three-hitter with 13 strikeouts. She also beat 21st ranked Keene State (N.H.) and shutout Wheaton (Mass.) in a scoreless tie that was called after eight innings. Guckenberger finished the week with 25 strikeouts, one walk and seven hits allowed in 22 innings pitched. Opponents hit .095 against Guckenberger for the week. UW-Stevens Point is ranked 17th in the country and finished 6-3-1 for the week with two losses coming to Division II squads. The softball teams pitching staff posted a 0.91 earned run average for the week. Also, baseball player Pat McCann was named the teams position player of the week after hitting .500 (16-for-32) for the trip with 10 runs scored and 15 RBIs. The sophomore shortstop from Antigo had four doubles and two home runs for an .813 slugging percentage. He also had 36 fielding chances with just one error for the week. |
