Men's Swimming in Eighth Place After First Day of NCAA Meet

Randy Boelk finished fourth in the 200 meter individual medley to lead the UW-Stevens Point men's swimming and diving team to eighth place in the team standings following the first day of competition at the NCAA Division III championships in Atlanta.

Boelk had a time of 1:53.38 and finished behind three swimmers from Kenyon (Ohio), which holds the first day lead with 207.5 points, which is over 100 more than any other school. UW-Stevens Point has 49 team points.

The Pointers, who had won the 400 medley relay the past two years, finished sixth this year as Jeremy Francioli, Brent Newport, Anthony Harris and Boelk posted a time of 3:25.78. Kenyon broke the Pointers' meet record from last year with a time of 3:20.39.

The Pointers' 200 freestyle relay team of Nick Jansen, Scott Bowe, Eric Sands and Boelk finished 13th with a time of 1:25.69. The meet continues through Saturday.

Softball Falls to Wheaton; Beats Aurora in Florida

Michelle Gerber went two-for-three with a home run and four RBI's to lead the UW-Stevens Point softball team to an 8-3 victory over Aurora (Ill.) Thursday in Fort Myers, Fla. Earlier in the day, the Pointers fell to Wheaton (Mass.) 5-4.

Against Aurora, Nicki Bertram pitched a complete game for her first win of the season. Jill Van Wychen was two-for-four and Brooke Woller was two-for-three.

In the loss to Wheaton, UW-Stevens Point led 4-0 entering the fifth inning, but the Lyons struck for five runs in the inning, which included two Pointer errors.

Jamie Lowney took the loss for the Pointers, striking out eight and walking one. Gerber was two-for-three with two RBI's for the Pointers. Nikki Best, Kelly Rutta, Cari Briley and Sarah Berg all added two hits for the Pointers, who are now 5-2-1 and complete their trip with two games Friday.

Bielmeier's Shutout Leads Baseball Team to Split

Troy Bielmeier pitched his second shutout in as many outings as the UW-Stevens Point baseball team defeated Rhode Island College 5-0 Thursday in Fort Myers, Fla. The Anchormen rallied for a 2-1 victory in the nightcap.

Bielmeier struck out four in the Pointers' victory. Pat McCann gave the Pointers a 2-0 lead in the first inning with a two-run double and finished two-for-three at the plate.

Jon Jagler was three-for-five, while Randy Reed, Sam Molski, Kevin Fry and Ryan Ivy all had two hits. Ivy added a solo home run.

The Pointers took a 1-0 lead in the second game as McCann drove home Jagler with a first inning single, but UW-Stevens Point had just four hits. McCann and Molski were each two-for-three to account for the Pointers' offense. Jeff Pieper pitched a complete game with four strikeouts to take the loss. UW-Stevens Point is now 4-3 and takes on Denison (Ohio) in a doubleheader Friday.
