Pointers Finish 3-1 at Concordia St. Paul Tournament

UW-Stevens Point swept its first three games, but faltered in the fourth to finish 3-1 at the Concordia-St. Paul tournament Thursday night and Friday morning at the Rice Street Dome in St. Paul, Minn. The Pointers are now 9-4-1 for the season.

Michelle Gerber broke a 4-4 tie with a fourth inning RBI single in a 9-4 opening game win over Bethel (Minn.). Gerber finished two-for-three, while Kelly Rutta and Sarah Berg were both three-for-four and Carrie Hermsen and Jill Van Wychen were both two-for-four.

The Pointers led 2-0 in the third before Bethel scored four runs to take a 4-2 lead. However, UW-Stevens Point responded with an RBI double by Berg, who later scored on an error to tie the game. Gerber broke the tie in the fourth by knocking home Rutta. The Pointers added four more runs in the fifth.

Karen Guckenberger earned the win with five innings of three-hit relief, striking out eight and walking one.

Guckenberger also earned the win in a 3-1 victory over Concordia-St. Paul. The freshman from South Milwaukee allowed an unearned run in the seventh inning, snapping her string of 33 1/3 consecutive shutout innings to open her collegiate career.

The Pointers managed only four hits, but took advantage of six Concordia errors, including two in a two-run third inning.

Gerber and Rutta both went three-for-four as the Pointers pounded out 15 hits in a 9-4 win over Mayville State (N.D.) in the opening game Friday. The Pointers trailed 2-1 in the fourth before scoring five runs on six hits to take control. UW-Stevens Point added three runs on five hits in the sixth. Guckenberger earned the win with 2 1/3 innings of three-hit relief.

Division II Minnesota-Duluth broke open a 1-1 tie with four runs in the sixth inning for a 5-2 win over the Pointers in the fourth game of the tournament.

Kimberly Grubba had two of the Pointers’ four hits, including a two-out double that started a seventh inning rally. Grubba scored to cut the lead to 5-2, but the Pointers stranded two runners on base. She also drove home UW-Stevens Point’s first run with a second-inning single.

Starting pitcher Nicki Bertram suffered the loss as the Pointers had five errors.
