Pointer Sports April 12, 2000 Solid Pitching, Frys Hitting Lead Baseball Team Past Marian Kevin Fry drove in five runs in the opening game and Jeff Pieper pitched the UW-Stevens Point baseball teams fifth shutout of the season as the Pointers swept Marian 7-1 and 8-0 in a non-conference doubleheader Wednesday in Fond du Lac. Fry, who entered the game with five RBIs all season, went three-for-four with a pair of doubles and drove in all his runs with two outs. He also had one RBI in the second game victory. The Pointers, who are now 15-4 overall, are ranked 23rd in the NCAA Division III and have won 11 of their last 12 games After Sam Molski drove in Jon Jagler with a run-scoring double in the first inning and the Sabres (11-13) tied the game with an unearned run in the second inning, Fry broke the tie with an RBI single in the third. The designated hitter from Helenville, Wis. added two-run doubles in the fifth and seventh innings. Ryan Ivy followed with an RBI double off the centerfield wall to score Fry in the seventh for a 7-1 lead. Troy Bielmeier threw just 77 pitches in the complete game victory and has not allowed an earned run in 26 innings pitched for the season. In the second game, Molski gave the Pointers a 2-0 lead in the third inning with a blast over the left-centerfield fence for his fifth home run of the season. The Pointers added four runs in the second as Fry hit a run-scoring triple to right field and scored on another double by Ivy. Mike McCann added an RBI groundout and Jon Jagler had an RBI single for a 6-0 lead. Mike Wendorf had a run-scoring single in the sixth and Matt Peetz scored on an error to account for the Pointers final two runs. Pat McCann led UW-Stevens Point at two-for-three with a double. Meanwhile, Pieper cruised along, scattering just five hits in five different innings while throwing just 71 pitches for his second victory. UW-Stevens Point is in action again Thursday with a doubleheader at Augsburg (Minn.) at 2:30 p.m.
Seven Different Winners Pace Mens Track Team at UW-Oshkosh Seven different athletes and one relay team won events to lead the UW-Stevens Point mens track and field team at Wednesdays UW-Oshkosh dual meet. No team scores were kept in the meet, which was a makeup from Saturdays postponement. Dan Schwamberger eclipsed an NCAA Division III provisional qualifying time in winning the 1,500 meters with a time of 3:54.47 for the Pointers. Other UW-Stevens Point winners included Matt Buska in the 200 meters at 23.31 seconds, Craig Gunderson in the 400 meters at 49.85 seconds and Mike Mead in the high jump at six-feet, seven-inches. Josh Hamilton won the triple jump with a leap of 13.58 meters, Cory Lesperance won the long jump at 6.66 meters and Joel Schult captured the discus title with a throw of 48.71 meters. The Pointers 4x100 meter relay team also won in a time of 42.60 seconds. UW-Stevens Points mens and womens teams compete at the North Central Invitational Saturday in Naperville, Ill. |
