Head Coach
Bob Semling
Coming off a 17-10 inaugural season with a young squad, optimism is high
for Bob Semling's UW-Stevens Point men's basketball team as the Pointer
coach enters his second season in 2006-07.
Having
served as an assistant coach with the Pointers' back-to-back NCAA
Division III championship teams in 2004 and 2005, Semling took over the
reins in 2005-06 and guided a relatively fresh group of players back
near the top of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference
standings with a third place finish and 11-5 league record.
It is the
first collegiate head coaching job for Semling, who had two successful
stints as an assistant coach with the Pointers as well as eight years at
the Division I level.
Semling was
an assistant coach at UW-Stevens Point under Bob Parker from 1988-95 as
the Pointers posted a 127-63 record, including a 27-2 mark in 1991-92.
During Semlings tenure at UW-Stevens Point, the Pointers won two
conference championships and made two NAIA national tournament
appearances.
He then
spent seven seasons as an assistant coach at UW-Green Bay and one year as
the Director of Basketball Operations at New Mexico before returning to
UW-Stevens Point for the 2003-04 season. While at UW-Green Bay, Semling
helped the Phoenix to a Mid-Continent Conference title and NCAA tournament
appearance in his first season.
A Merrill
native, Semling was a three-year starter at quarterback at UW-Eau Claire
from 1977-79. As a student at UW-Eau Claire, he assisted with Ken Anderson
and the mens basketball team, making NAIA Final Four appearances in each
of his final two seasons.
Semling
then spent one season as an assistant at Park Falls High School and
assisted Bennett for two seasons at Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln High School,
reaching the state tournament with both schools. Semling was the head
coach at Wausau West High School for three seasons from 1985-88, winning
back-to-back regional championships in his final two seasons prior to his
first stint at UW-Stevens Point.
He and his
wife, Kathy, have three children, Jenna, Kreg and Lauryn.
Assistant Coach
Scott Anderson
A standout player for the Pointers from 1988-90, Scott Anderson begins
his second year as the teams assistant coach in 2006-07.
Anderson spent the previous six
years as the head varsity boys basketball coach at Neenah High School. He
compiled a 75-59 record with the Rockets, leading the team to the WIAA
state tournament in 1999-2000.
Anderson was a first-team all-conference performer as a senior in 1989-90
while leading the team at 16.4 points per game and shooting a
single-season school record 92.5 percent from the free throw line. He also
led the team in scoring as a junior with 13.6 points per game. Anderson
holds the Pointers career free throw shooting record at 90.4 percent. He
also competed two seasons as a pitcher on the Pointers baseball team.
Anderson played his first two seasons at UW-Eau Claire.
An
Auburndale native, Anderson scored 1,977 career points in high school
while averaging 32.4 points per game and playing for his father, Tim, who
is one of Wisconsins all-time winningest prep coaches. Anderson was also
an all-state baseball player and all-conference football player in high
school.
Graduate Assistant
Jason Kalsow
UW-Stevens Point's all-time leading scorer and rebounder, Jason Kalsow
is in his second season as a graduate assistant coach with the Pointers.
Kalsow recently complete a bachelor's degree in Broadfield Social
Studies.
Kalsow
scored 1,859 points to rank 12th in WIAC history. He also grabbed
883 career rebounds and dished out 465 assists. He was the 2004-05
National Association of Basketball Coaches National Player of the Year
and a three-time first-team all-WIAC performer while starting all 121
