Pointers Endure Rare
Defeat to St. Scholastica

For the first time since 1986, UW-Stevens Point fell
victim to St. Scholastica in men�s hockey as the Saints rallied for a 3-2
victory over the Pointers on Saturday in Duluth, Minn.
The Pointers had a 44-game unbeaten streak against the
Saints snapped in the one-goal loss that was UW-Stevens Point�s sixth straight
defeat. The Pointers, who were 41-0-3 in the series since 1986, are now 5-14-2
overall and 1-8-1 in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association. St. Scholastica
is 12-7-2 overall and 5-4-1 in the league.
The Saints scored the only goal of the first period on
a goal by Jake Nelson with 2:23 left in the period. However, the Pointers
responded with a goal from Brett Beckfeld early in the second period and a
shorthanded score from Rolf Ulvin midway through the frame. Sean Fish assisted
both goals and Ulvin had an assist on Beckfeld�s score.
St. Scholastica rallied just 21 seconds after Ulvin�s
goal with a power play goal from A.J. Tucker to tie the game. Tucker later
scored the game-winner at the 5:07 mark of the third period on another power
play.
UW-Stevens Point was 0-for-9 on the power play for the
game. The Pointers had two third period power plays and pulled the goalie for
the final seconds, but was unable to tie the game. St. Scholastica held a 32-24
advantage in shots as Marcus Paulson made 31 saves for UW-Stevens Point. |
