Pointers Fall in NCHA
Quarterfinals at UW-Stout

UW-Stevens Point surrendered three goals in the opening
period and couldn�t recover in a season-ending 5-0 setback to UW-Stout in the
second game of a Northern Collegiate Hockey Association quarterfinal series on
Saturday in Menomonie.
The Blue Devils, who improved to 21-4-2 overall, also
won the opening night 3-2 to sweep the series and advance to play at St. Norbert
in the semifinals on Saturday. UW-Stevens Point ended its season with a 7-18-2
overall record. It was the third straight year the Pointers have been swept in
the quarterfinals and also just the third time ever.
UW-Stevens Point was whistled for a penalty 40 seconds
into the game and the Blue Devils took advantage with a goal at the 1:29 mark by
Andy Wiesner. UW-Stout later scored two goals in a span of less than two minutes. Jake Erickson scored at the 12:04 mark, Wiesner tallied again at
the 13:56 mark.
UW-Stout outshot the Pointers 20-5 in the opening
period, but the shots were even over the final two periods, ending at 39-24 in
favor of the Blue Devils for the game. The Blue Devils added a goal by Todd
Wynia at 17:50 of the
second period for a 4-0 lead and notched their final goal
when Andy Sternberg scored shorthanded with just 1:24 left in the game. Marcus
Paulson stopped 34 shots for the Pointers.
UW-Stout won all four meetings
over UW-Stevens Point after winning just four of the previous 24 encounters
prior to this season. |
