Five Players Score as Pointers Prevail in Opener

     Five different players scored goals as the UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team opened the 2006-07 season with a road victory over St. Mary's on Friday in Winona, Minn.

     The Pointers jumped on the Cardinals quickly with two early goals as Dan Francis scored off assists from Tommy Upton and Brett Beckfeld on a five-on-three power play just 2:20 into the game. Nick Zebro added a goal at the 3:33 mark with assists from Francis and Lally. The 2-0 lead stood after one period despite the Cardinals holding a 12-4 advantage in shots.

     St. Mary's evened the game with a pair of second period goals as Adam Gill scored just 1:12 into the period and then David Gross notched the first of his two goals on a five-on-three power play at the 11:30 mark. The Cardinals' power play goal was its only man-advantage goal in 14 power play opportunities.

     UW-Stevens Point regained the lead just 45 seconds later as Matt Stendahl scored with an assist from Beckfeld. The pair struck again with 1:30 left in the period as Beckfeld scored with assists from Stendahl and Karl Larsen for a 4-2 lead.

     Gross scored his second goal at 1:01 of the third period to bring the Cardinals back within a goal, but Russel Law finished the scoring with assists from Josh Calleja and Sean Fish at the 13:09 mark.

     Marcus Paulson made 36 saves as the Cardinals held a 39-27 advantage in shots. The physical game included a total of 30 penalties between the two teams.
