Box Score

UW-Stevens Point got off to a fast start and snapped a six-game losing streak by rolling past Lake Forest 6-2 in a Northern Collegiate Hockey Association contest on Friday at Willett Arena.

The Pointers outshot the Foresters 47-19 for the game, including 19-8 in the first period in racing to a two-goal lead for the victory. Matt Stendahl had two goals and Nick Zebro and Brett Beckfeld each had two assists in the win as the Pointers improved to 6-14-2 overall and 2-8-1 in the NCHA. Lake Forest was undefeated in its last seven meetings with the Pointers, but fell to 3-17-2 overall and 0-9-2 in the league.

Dan Francis got the Pointers out to an early lead, rifling a long power play goal over the shoulder of Foresters goalie Scott Campbell just 4:46 into the game. Zebro and Tom Upton each had assists and it marked the first time in the past five games the Pointers have scored first as they improved to 5-2 this season when tallying the games first goal.

Stendahl put the Pointers ahead 2-0 with a goal at the 14:55 mark of the period off a pass from Zebro. Lake Forest countered on a goal from Tyler Canal at the 8:30 mark of the second period to pull within 2-1. However, UW-Stevens Point answered on its sixth power play opportunity of the period as Rolf Ulvin scored with assists from Beckfeld and Sean Fish.

Stendahl scored off an assist from Ross Johnson at the 6:43 mark of the third period and Johnson put the Pointers ahead 5-1 on a shorthanded goal at the 9:09 mark off a pass from Beckfeld. It marked the fourth straight game and fifth time in six games the Pointers have scored shorthanded.

Lake Forests Peter Morrison followed with a power play goal 29 seconds later, but Josh Calleja finished the scoring for the Pointers on a goal with 33 seconds left in the game.
