A late first period flurry sparked the UW-Stevens Point mens hockey team in snapping its five-game winless streak in a big way with an 8-2 rout of Concordia-Moorhead on Saturday at the Mosinee Recreation Center.

The Pointers broke a 1-1 tie by scoring three times in the final three minutes of the opening period and went on to bury the Cobbers and improve to 5-8-2 overall, while Concordia-Moorhead fell to 6-6 overall.

Brett Beckfeld was involved in the Pointers first three goals, scoring at the 2:12 mark and then assisting Pat Lee for a score at the 17:19 mark before scoring again 45 seconds later. Mosinee product Nick Zebro added a goal in his hometown rink with three seconds left to finish the first period as the Pointers broke a string of five straight scoreless opening periods.

Concordia-Moorhead held an 11-8 advantage in shots in the second period, but UW-Stevens Point scored the only two goals with Sean Fish scoring at the 1:33 mark of the period and Lee netting a power play goal at the 15:12 mark. The Cobbers failed to score on six power plays in the period, including two five-on-threes that each lasted over a minute.
