Football Team to
Play Three Home Games During 2006 Season
For the first time in nearly 60 years, UW-Stevens
Point will play just three home football games during the upcoming 2006
season.
The Pointers will play on the road for all three
non-conference games and four of their seven Wisconsin Intercollegiate
Athletic Conference contests. It marks the first time since 1947 that the
Pointers will play only three times at Goerke Field when the team played a
total of seven games.
The seven road games match the most in school
history. The Pointers played seven of their 11 games on the road in 1987 and
seven of their eight away from home in 1914.
UW-Stevens Point will open the season for the
second straight year against Hardin-Simmons, playing Sept. 2 in Abilene,
Texas. The game will mark a return trip to the site where the Pointers
appeared in the 1977 NAIA playoffs and lost to Abilene Christian in the
opening round.
Following a week off, the Pointers will host UW-La
Crosse in the conference opener and annual Spud Bowl on Sept. 16.
UW-Stevens Point will then play four straight road
games, beginning with non-conference games at Waldorf in Forest City, Iowa
and Trinity International in Deerfield, Ill. The Pointers are playing
Waldorf for the third straight year and Trinity International for the first
time ever.
Homecoming is set for Oct. 21 against UW-Oshkosh,
while the other home game will be Nov. 4 against UW-Platteville.
