Baumgartner
Selected for Induction to College Football Hall of Fame
Former UW-Stevens
Point quarterback Kirk Baumgartner has been selected for induction to the
College Football Hall of Fame on August 12-13 in South Bend, Ind.
Baumgartner is one of
four players from Divisions I-AA, II, III and NAIA in this years class. He
is the first UW-Stevens Point player ever selected for induction to the Hall
of Fame. It is the 10th year that the Hall of Fame has enshrined a class of
players from all divisions. Baumgartner is the second player from a
Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference school inducted into the Hall
of Fame, joining Marty Below, who played at UW-Oshkosh from 1918-23.
In addition to
Baumgartner, other inductees are Marshall wide receiver Mike Barber
(1985-88), Mississippi Valley State quarterback Willie Totten (1982-85) and
Lincoln (Mo.) running back Leo Lewis (1951-54).
Former UW-La Crosse
coach Roger Harring will also be inducted along with former Pacific Lutheran
coach Frosty Westering, whose team played Baumgartners Pointer squad in the
1987 NAIA championship game. Harring is the first coach from a WIAC school
to be enshrined.
Baumgartner is still
the all-time NAIA passing leader with 14,847 career yards during his career
from 1986-89. He was a two-time NAIA Offensive Player of the Year and holds
three of the top seven single-season passing performances in NAIA history.
A Colby native,
Baumgartner also participated in the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala. following
his senior season. He was a ninth round draft choice of the Green Bay
Packers in 1990.
To be eligible for
the Hall of Fame, individuals must have been a first-team All-American
selection and played within the past 50 years, but no fewer than 10 years
ago. They also must be retired from professional football. Coaches become
eligible three years after retirement and must have been a head coach for a
minimum of 10 years and 100 games. |
